What Is AI Search?

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are changing how people find answers, and businesses. Here is what AI search actually is, in plain English, and why it matters for getting found.

For 20 years, searching meant the same thing: you typed a question, Google gave you a list of blue links, and you clicked one. AI search changes that. Now the search engine reads across many sources and writes you a direct answer, often without you clicking anything at all.

You have probably already seen it. Search something on Google today and there is a good chance an AI-written summary appears at the very top, above the regular results. That is an AI Overview. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question and they will give you a written answer in seconds, pulling from across the web and naming the sources they trusted.

The Three Big Players

Google AI Overviews. Google's own AI answer that sits at the top of many search results. It summarizes the best information it can find and links to a handful of sources. For a local business, being one of those cited sources is the new top spot.

ChatGPT. The assistant most people think of when they hear AI. Its newer versions can search the live web, so when someone asks it to recommend a service or explain a topic, it can pull in and name real businesses and pages.

Perplexity. A search tool built entirely around AI answers, with citations front and center. It is smaller than Google but growing fast among people who want a straight answer with sources.

How AI Search Actually Works

Under the hood, these tools read enormous amounts of text and learn how language fits together. When you ask a question, they do not "look up" one page. They pull relevant information from many trustworthy sources, weigh it, and compose an answer. Then, increasingly, they show you which sources they used.

That last part is the opportunity. AI engines do not invent businesses to recommend. They surface the ones they can find, understand, and trust. If your business is clearly described, well-structured, and credible online, you become a source the AI is comfortable citing. If you are invisible or confusing, you get left out of the answer entirely.

"I have watched search change since 1995, and this is the biggest shift yet. The businesses that win are not the ones chasing the newest trick. They are the ones that are clear about who they are and what they do, because that is exactly what AI needs to recommend you with confidence."

Why It Matters for a Local Business

Here is the shift that should get your attention. When AI answers a question directly, fewer people click through to a list of websites. That sounds scary, but for a local business it is actually an opening. When someone asks an AI "who is the best web designer near me" or "how do I get my business on Google," the AI names specific businesses. You want to be one of the names it gives.

And the good news is that the work to get cited by AI overlaps almost entirely with good SEO. Clear answers to real questions, consistent business details, schema markup, genuine local trust, these are the same things that win classic search. Do them well and you show up in both worlds at once.

The businesses that lose in AI search are the ones that were already invisible: thin websites, half-finished profiles, no clear information. AI just widens the gap between the businesses that show up and the ones that do not. The sooner you build a clear, credible presence, the sooner AI starts recommending you instead of a competitor.

AI Search FAQs

What is AI search?

AI search is any search experience that answers a question directly with AI, instead of just listing links. Examples include Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. They read across many sources and write a single answer, often citing the businesses and sites they pulled from.

Is AI search replacing Google?

Not replacing, but reshaping it. Google itself now puts AI Overviews above the regular results for many searches, and tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity are pulling some searches away entirely. The smart move is to be visible in both classic results and AI answers.

How do I get my business mentioned in AI answers?

The same foundations that win classic SEO also help AI cite you: clear, well-structured content that answers real questions, consistent business information, schema markup, and a trustworthy local presence. AI engines favor sources they can understand and trust.
